2010 Grinnell Artist Residency – June 28 to July 24 – Registration Information
We seek applications for the 2010 Grinnell Artist Residency running from Sunday, June 28 to Saturday, July 24, in Grinnell, Iowa.
The Grinnell Artist Residency is now in its fourth year of existence. In 2006 and 2008 the residency artists came from the Maryland Institute College of Art. In 2009 the residency artists came from Illinois State University. The residency encourages students not only to engage in individual work but also to work on one or more group projects.
This year we are selecting up to five students from Iowa universities and colleges to attend the residency.
Selected resident artists/writers/performers receive:
- Free housing on the farm of Tom & Alesia Lacina, 1/2 mile from Grinnell
- Large shared studio space and access to wood shop
- Final individual/group show (with catalog) at Grinnell Arts Center & Gallery on July 23-24
- $200 Stipend
- Four week Intensive individual and collective art practice
Director of the program is artist Joe Lacina. www.joelacina.com. Joe graduated from Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in painting and founded the residency program in 2006. Joe is now a partner-owner of Extra Extra, a gallery and bookshop located in Philadelphia, dedicated to the exposure of under-represented artists challenging the limits of the visual and performing arts. www.eexxttrraa.com.
Eligibility: Upper level undergraduates, recent graduates and graduate students of Iowa universities or colleges may apply. Applicants should be serious about pursuing a career in visual art, writing and/or performance and must be interested in collective art practice.
Applications must be sent digitally (PDF; JPG or as otherwise indicated below) to tom@lacina.us and should include:
- Letter of interest with a statement of purpose describing what the artist hopes to individually accomplish during the residency and their interest in working on a group project.
- Resume (with complete contact information).
- Letter of recommendation from a college-level teacher.
- Representative examples of work in digital form:
visual artists:
- 5-10 images of work, JPGs, 72 dpi, with a maximum size of 1000 pixels on either side. Include corresponding image list with title, date, media and dimensions.
performance artists:
- 5-10 images of performance(s) and/or video (video is optional). JPGs, 72 dpi, with a maximum size of 1000 pixels on either side. Include corresponding performance list with title, date, and media.
- Video must be Quicktime compatible
writers:
- 2 writing samples
- One work of prose presented in a visually interesting format such as a concrete poem.
Notes: Applicants may submit examples in more than one area; however, they should make certain their submission is complete within each area selected. The selection criteria will focus on individual artistic excellence and what the artist/performer/writer will bring to the group experience.
