About Us

The Grinnell Community Theatre (GCT) consists of a volunteer committee; which produces and occasionally sponsors theatrical activity in Grinnell.

GCT is based in Grinnell, Iowa, and produces live theatrical plays and musicals. GCT encourages anyone interested in theatre to participate in our productions. No experience necessary.

The Grinnell Community Theatre was formed in 1972 to give Grinnellians an opportunity to participate in live dramatic art. However, in 1954, a large production was staged on the football field as part of the Grinnell Centennial celebration.

The first plays were The Phantom Tollbooth, a junior theatre production, directed by Anne Bendheim; and Kings, Queens, and Pawns, an adult reader's theatre production directed by Ned Donahue. Funding for these productions was obtained from a community Art Association.

The board of directors was formed in 1972 and funding was sought from the Grinnell Parks and Recreation. Founding board members include Esther and Ned Donahue, Dick Cervene, Jean Burkle, Bill Vanderpool, Bob Sheeder, Esther Bethel, Dorothy Pinder, John Kintzinger and Tom Latimer.

In 1976 in cooperation with the Grinnell Country Club, the dinner theatre was off to a successful start with Noel Coward's Nude With Violin.

In 1980, the first summer musical theatre production of Pippin began an everlasting summer landmark for the Grinnell Community Theatre. That first musical was produced by a nest of Grinnell community leaders, including Barbara and Jane Lien, Ron Meddock, Babe Voertman, Deb Yellick and many many more.

With the dinner theatre still a success and the summer musicals a part of Grinnell tradition, GCT is proud to be a part of this community and draw on its extremely talented members.

GCT is dedicated to improving its offerings, so if you have any suggestions, recommendations, criticisms, or comments, please share them.
